Amorgos is an island which has inspired numerous artists and countless everyday people. It is no accident that many of its visitors keep returning year after year – it has established itself in their hearts as a home-away-from-home, an island offering tranquility and true hospitality. Maybe it is the landscape, the mountains with little villages nestled in their embrace, maybe the awe-inspiring monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, literally hanging onto the cliff-face, or the religious historical monuments of Theologos and Valsamitis monasteries, perhaps the enchanting view from the ancient mountain footpaths (now properly marked and sign-posted) crossed by locals and tourists alike. Then again, maybe it is the traditional dishes, festivities and herb aromas, or the eccentric inhabitants themselves. These people have refused to follow the current of mass tourism and have remained faithful to their habits and traditions, the traditions that the island itself would have them follow.
